The Book Dragon offers independent authors something truly unique in today’s publishing landscape—a retail partnership specifically designed for the indie community. Unlike most bookstores and online retailers, we focus exclusively on independent authors, deliberately choosing not to stock traditionally published works in our physical premises. This dedicated focus allows us to provide specialised support, but it also presents unique challenges. Without the guaranteed income stream that comes from established publishing houses and well-known authors, we’ve created a tiered membership model that enables us to sustain our mission. Our Bronze membership provides the entry point into the Book Dragon family, offering essential retail presence and visibility. For those seeking more comprehensive support, our Silver and Gold memberships include additional benefits designed to nurture writers at every stage of their journey. Our subscription fees aren’t simply a revenue source—they’re an investment in a community-powered ecosystem that provides indies with specialised services typically inaccessible to self-published authors. This model has earned us recognition as a collaborative voice for independent publishing, with memberships in prestigious organisations including the Booksellers Association and National Book Tokens, along with our valued partnership with the National Literary Trust. By joining The Book Dragon, you’re not just finding shelf space—you’re becoming part of a recognised movement that’s changing how independent literature reaches readers.

Our Author Services Manager

Our Book Dragon Business Partner
Our Author Services Manager, Michelle Marshall works closely with, and regularly communicates with the author during the course of the membership to ensure that all of our authors are receiving their exclusive membership benefits. Michelle builds a positive working relationship with the author getting to know them well, and their work. She provides guidance and advice on the marketability of the authors books, and ideas for self promotion, offers a sounding board, facilitates contact between the different departments that the author is interested in working with, and keeps up to date with the authors news & updates sharing this on our social media pages.
Together the author and Michelle collaborate on ideas, ensuring the author is marketed and promoted in the way the author envisages.

Our Author Services Manager Michelle Marshall had this to say “My role is to encourage our authors to flourish as much as they deserve to. We assist them in getting themselves and their work to the best standard it can possibly be, not only by nurturing their creativity, but by helping them to communicate to as wide an audience as possible. In order to do this,  business partners seek to increase engagement with books. They aim to promote the message that reading is not only a fun free time activity, but something that ignites the imagination and helps to improve empathy and positive mental health.  We work to support our authors at every step of their literary journey, no matter how far along the path they are. From someone taking their first tentative steps into the world of writing to those who already have numerous novels penned, we have something to offer everyone. The Business Partner serves as a contact point between all the different branches of The Book Dragon business. They provide guidance as to which services may be of interest to the author and help facilitate their use. Their support helps authors to make the most of the many benefits of their membership.”

Our Founder

Kirsty McKay founded The Book Dragon on a simple but powerful conviction: that every author deserves a genuine partner in their publishing journey, not just a place on a shelf. Having self-published her own debut novel and encountered firsthand the closed doors, dismissive attitudes, and lack of support so often faced by independent writers, Kirsty set out to build something different — a business that champions the writer as much as the work.

At the heart of her vision is a belief in helping authors find and own their voice. Rather than measuring success purely in sales, Kirsty and her team focus on guiding writers to develop their craft, grow in confidence, and reach the readers who need their stories most. It’s an approach rooted in empowerment: giving independent and self-published authors the tools, mentorship, and platform to compete on equal footing with the traditional publishing world.
