Oscar the Osprey by Author Jane Clack – Book Review

This book would have been a 5* from me had it not been for one tiny niggle – the pages where the story wraps around a circular picture is a little difficult to read. I had to search for the beginning of the sentence, and suspect children might struggle with this at first.

That apart, the illustrations are bright and colourful, and little Oscar is very cute and engaging. The changing font works well and keeps interest, and will challenge young readers to adapt to different styles.

The fish repetition will encourage non-readers to join in with the chant and, hopefully, assist them in progressing from listening to stories to reading for themselves. The ‘Did You Know?’ and ‘Questions and Discussion Points’ at the rear of the book are a welcome addition, and will keep interest going even after the story has been finished.

A wonderful book for storytelling or for progressing readers, and would work well in primary school libraries. I award 4 stars.
