Description

A terrifying story from the author of Tales from the Vicarage and More Tales from the Vicarage.
On his way home one stormy night, Jim Wilson sees a horse-drawn Victorian hearse outside St Stephen’s Church. On investigation, he finds inside a strange internment in progress involving an ancient coffin attended by twelve sinister, black-robed persons of monastic aspect, assisted by four funeral attendants in full Victorian attire.
When these uncanny mourners have departed, a powerful presence remains.
Whatever this entity may be, it is, with difficulty, expelled from the church, but the black-robed brethren and their charge reappear in other locations. Clearly, their aim is to find a permanent resting place for whatever or whoever is in the coffin. If the sanctity of these places of repose is violated by the presence of evil, the consequences for the intruders are indeed horrifying.
The Canon, Jim and their friend, the archdiocesan exorcist, set out to find the reason behind the strange appearance of this sinister band of peripatetic mourners. Their search is both physically and spiritually hazardous.
