The narrator, Dr Jim Wilson, retired to Upper Gibbet following his bereavement. Here he quickly struck up a friendship with the incumbent of St Stephen’s Church, Canon Oliver Ball.
Canon Ball has experienced many strange events during his career in the Church, and he recounts these to Jim Wilson. The latter, in turn, records them for his readers.
As their friendship develops, other incidents occur, some of which have been published in a predecessor to this volume, Tales from the vicarage.
This book contains accounts of further episodes, some experienced by the Canon alone, others by the two friends together.
Those of a nervous disposition might find some of these stories disturbing.
