Greener Expectations is a honest and heartwarming semi-autobiographical tale of a struggling young couple in the industrial Northeast of England. For Emma and Ron Holmes and their ever-growing family, 1964 is a world of cobbled terraces, two-up two-downs, and an outside toilet.
After three years of feeling homesick, the young couple are returning to Ron’s hometown of Stockbridge, and though he’s looking forward to new employment, Emma is daunted by the prospect of moving in with her in-laws and the challenges this presents.
Full of social observation and humorous detail, this is a rich and highly entertaining account of working-class family life, very different from Emma’s rural upbringing.
