Zoli the witch has been saving up hard for a deluxe new broom, but when it arrives she is too excited and impatient to read the instructions. She is launched into orbit on an epic journey. But how will it end?

I’m a retired teacher living in Yorkshire and I love to spend my free time writing. I’ve experimented with all kinds of genres, but my true passion lies in creating children’s books. I’m a mum and a grandma and I have contributed towards the education of hundreds, perhaps thousands of children. Incredibly, I have managed to live to tell the tale… as have they!
My other hobbies include reading, yoga, pilates and travelling. I adore animals and wildlife. I also like to have a stab at cooking but have had some fairly spectacular catastrophes. This has usually happened when I’ve been overly ambitious – crème brûlées and blow torches, together with exploding liquidisers are just a few memories that I’d rather like to forget! The reality is that I’m a foodie but am probably better off sticking to simpler things and appreciating the culinary skills of others when it comes to anything more complicated.
The Cat - I loved her cat! He doesn’t have a name, but he is full of wisdom that if Zoli had only listened to, her turbo-charged broom would still be intact. Of course, she would have missed out on a wonderful adventure, too! (Phoebe Wilby)
Zoli - Zoli is of course adorable and relatable. She is so excited to get her Christmas gift and leaps on it immediately. Her impulsivity is relatable. Any kid who’s been waiting for a specific present for months will relate. She is adventurous, kind. I loved that she wanted to explore space. It’s not often I read works combining space and witch themes. She goes on her adventure and realizes that she should have read the manual. But she still enjoys it and has a great time! And she realizes too her old broom was just fine. (Sophie Jupillat Posey)
Zoli - Zoli the witch is young adult who is easily excited (or so it seems) by technology - something that a lot of us can relate to. She bypasses instructions to start using her new broom immediately as she cannot wait - again something we can all relate to. Her admittance that she was wrong to do so is a very human one, and she has learned a lesson. Not everyone will be so quick to admit their own mistakes, but everyone can learn from Zoli! She is a fun, friendly witch and readers will love the space adventure this book is based on. We can feel her emotions and have empathy. (Yvonne Marrs)
Lucy Nicholson’s illustrations are whimsical and colourful and it’s very difficult to choose just one favourite. However, since I must choose, the illustration on Page 13 of Zoli’s crooked house in silhouette against the purple night sky is particularly pleasing and eye-catching. I particularly loved the little cat perched in an upstairs window! (Phoebe Wilby)
My favorite picture was on page 27 when she falls towards the moon. It is so bright, colorful and quirky. It perfectly illustrates her and her impulsivity. We can also clearly see her cool broom. (Sophie Jupillat Posey)
P37 the cat lecturing Zoli or P41 the cat eyeing up the fish and chip supper! Such great illustrations that really bring the scenes to life. (Yvonne Marrs)
Overall Star Rating: 5 Stars Jane Clack’s The Adventures of Zoli and her Turbo-Charged Broom is a whimsical rhyming tale of what happens when you receive a long-awaited package from Amazon Prime and decide not to read the instructions before use. Catchy rhymes move the story along at a fast pace, mirroring the excitement of trialing a gadget. Zoli ignores the advice of her unnamed cat and takes off into the night sky, travelling the solar system, waving to the man on the moon and even seeing a green alien wearing jockey y-fronts on the way. Tragedy strikes, and Zoli crash-lands on the moon. How will she get home? As usual, Ms Clack’s books are educational as well as fun to read. They are reminiscent of the stories I read to my own children when they were growing up and I only wish I had grandchildren young enough to appreciate the simple pleasure of having such whimsical tales read to them. With cute characters, a fun storyline, and fabulous illustrations I would recommend this book to all. (Phoebe Wilby)
Overall Star Rating: 5 Stars: The Adventures of Zoli and Her Turbo-Charged Broom is a colorful, funny and energetic picture book that takes its readers on a whirlwind journey through space!Zoli is an immediately likable character, full of enthusiasm and just enough impatience to get herself into trouble! Excited by the arrival of her brand-new turbo-charged broom, she ignores the instructions and sets off on an adventure that takes literally into space. Her more cautious cat provides a humorous contrast to her impulsive personality. The rhyming text keeps the story moving at a lively pace, while Zoli's journey introduces plenty of fun sights along the way, from planets and shooting stars to aliens and astronauts. At times, I would have loved to spend a little longer exploring some of these encounters, but younger readers are likely to enjoy the rapid succession of discoveries and surprises. The illustrations are a particular highlight. They are bright, expressive and full of personality, complementing the humor and energy of Zoli's adventure beautifully. I also enjoyed the additional educational material at the end of the book. They add another dimension to the story and give plenty to explore after Zoli's adventure has ended. This is a wonderfully entertaining combination of humor, adventure and learning, with an endearing heroine and illustrations that make Zoli's chaotic trip through space come alive! Overall Star Rating: 5 Stars: Personally, I love rhyming children's books, as I believe it helps with the ‘flow’ of the whole reading of the book. ‘The Adventures of Zoli and Her Turbo-Charged Broom’ by Jane Clack is a brilliant example of a colourfully illustrated educational children’s picture book. After saving hard for a deluxe new broom, Zoli the witch is impatient to use it when it arrives. The powerful broom sends her into orbit, where she has an adventure in space. But how does the story end? Storytelling quality from the author is excellent, producing a multilayered story with emotional depth. Engaging narrative that captures the imagination brilliantly and creates lasting emotional impact. Zoli the witch is a well developed character who shows clear personal growth after her adventure. This book creates lasting emotional impressions and encourages both empathy and reflection. The author has added material telling readers about space, including different planets, and the themed jokes section at the end is an outstanding way to encourage further reading and parent/sibling reading participation. These additional elements encourage critical thinking, introduce complex ideas accessibly and produce multifaceted learning opportunities. I have no hesitation in recommending this book.
