Shamanism is one of the oldest healing modalities on Earth, stemming from indigenous ways of living in harmony and balance with nature, based upon the inherent human connection to all life on this planet.
Change Your Life! is an introduction to contemporary shamanism, providing simple steps to navigate and apply the wisdom of the ancestors and teachings of nature-based spirituality for personal development, healing and mapping a new path in life.
Following university and several years travelling, Trevor’s twenty-five-year career in engineering and project management took him across the globe, working for a number of years in Hong Kong, Mexico and Brazil, before returning to the UK. However, like most on a spiritual path, Trevor knew there was something more he needed to be doing, especially as his health began to suffer. Digestive problems, coupled with acute tinnitus, eventually forced Trevor to leave work and seek his own healing path, as the mainstream healthcare offered was ineffective for him.
For twenty years Trevor has been working consciously on himself, beginning with yoga and meditation, followed by forays into various other esoteric areas and practices, before coming to shamanism and nature-based spirituality. This, Trevor knew, was his calling, and led to him completing a two-year training course on the medicine wheel and qualifying as a contemporary shamanic practitioner. Throughout this journey, Trevor filled many journals and knew he should share some of the profound insights he was privileged to have been given. From these writings, his book, Change Your Life! was born.
Trevor is now based in the lovely town of Saltburn-by-the Sea, in North East England, where he works with individuals and groups offering ceremonies and workshops, alongside private sessions for spiritual connection, personal development, healing and growth.
Change Your Life! Is informative and fascinating. Trevor’s writing style made the subject easy to access and understand and despite not having prior knowledge of the subject, his clear explanations shed light on the subject of shamanism. (Michelle Marshall)
Although I knew very little about Shamanism, I had the feeling that Trevor Cowan knew a lot. He draws on personal experience which he backs up with research. I found the subject fascinating, and seems to tie in with my own spiritual beliefs. Trevor shows how the shamanistic beliefs are woven through the fabric of our very being. He is careful to offer disclaimers and cautions where needed, and his passion for the practice shines through every word. (Phoebe Wilby)
The author definitely seemed to be an expert in the topic, all while staying humble and honest about what practices he could ethically pass along in written format, and which ones needed to be learned through in person teachings. He cited multiple sources throughout the book which gave him credibility and showed he’d done in depth research on his topics. The author seemed quite passionate about the various topics raised; he stresses the importance of taking care of oneself and Mother Earth and how vital it is to balance all these elements. Yet, he does so in a calm fashion, it’s not aggressive. He also never seems to talk down to you, the book flows almost as a casual conversation. (Sophie Jupillat Posey)
Indeed Trevor is very passionate on the topic of changing your life with shamanism. He intersperses the text with wisdom, and commonly used phrases and sayings. Overall he breaks down this topic into real world scenarios for his audience to better relate to. A must read for anyone wanting to find out more about this topic. (Yvonne Marrs)
The author seems exceptionally knowledgeable on their work and had an abundance of information to provide. They seem passionate and dedicated to informing and helping people. It was a very easy and enjoyable read. (Rebecca Wade)
The chance to live a life well lived shouldn’t be taken lightly. You don’t have to be anyone special, achieve anything in particular or reach a certain spiritual state, such as finding nirvana, heaven on earth or touch the hand of God. You just have to find that inner connection to life that has always been there. It was and is your birthright. (Michelle Marshall)
Life is not about being perfect or striving for perfection: be it in physical appearance, home and family life, relationships or achievements. Whomever you may know or read about in a magazine, need on TV or the internet, and think they are perfect or have an ideal life, rest assured, they have their own issues and troubles going on one way or another. (Phoebe Wilby)
“Reaching for the sky while rooted to the earth, trees show us the above and the below coming together as one. An excellent representation of the human spiritual journey.” I feel very connected to Mother Earth so this entire passage resonated with me. (Sophie Jupillat Posey)
They often meet deceased relatives, and sometimes a being of light or religious figure, who are usually associated with the person's own religion or culture. Very often, they have a conversation with the relatives or the being of light, who tells them to go back, it's not their time. Others will have a life review, where they will watch their whole life pass before their eyes or have an out-of-body experience, where they view their own emergency situation from above. (Rebecca Wade)
Overall Rating: 5 Stars. Trevor has created a wonderful guide to the principles of shamanic healing and how this can be incorporated into everyday routines and improve the reader’s life as a result. Whilst there’s certainly enough information here to read in order to start to become educated, it’s only by following the exercises that the book will be able to fulfill its full potential. (Michelle Marshall)
Overall Rating: 5 Stars. As an introduction to contemporary shamanism, Trevor Cowan’s Change Your Life! provides simple steps to guide you through a process of self-healing that can literally change your life. I took a little longer to read this book than I otherwise would have, and found myself nodding along, agreeing with his wisdom, and in places stopping to reflect on the exercises. I didn’t go so far as to complete any of them, mainly because my purpose was to review the written work, however, I know a more careful reading, pausing to assimilate the instructions and work on my own issues will be beneficial for me. You may find it beneficial, too! (Phoebe Wilby)
Overall Rating: 5 Stars. Trevor Cowan’s book about contemporary shamanism is an easy to read, yet powerful compendium of exercises and teachings that helps one connect with the spiritual world better. Cowan’s writing style flows and is easy to follow. The tone of the book is calming and peaceful, yet urgent in its own way to try to raise the issue that we’re losing our connection with the natural world and it’s harming everyone in the ecosystem. The book was well-structured, sections were easily labeled for future referencing. The pacing was good; it followed the medicine wheel topics and Directions, so very straightforward. The language at all times felt accessible and authentic; it felt like the author was chatting with the reader, but his expertise was clear. This was an enjoyable read with some eye-opening exercises and food for thought topics. (Sophie Jupillat Posey)

Overall Rating: 5 Stars. Change Your Life by Trevor Cowan was an extremely enlightening and informative read. I personally had no prior experience with shamanism, so this was my first insightful read into it, and I wasn’t disappointed. Trevor writes in a clear and concise manner. No matter how spiritual or realistic the topics he covered, they were easy to understand and digest. I cannot falter the writing or pace. The book is split into many sections and subheadings, so you are prepared for what you’re about to read and can easily understand what is being written. The book delves deep into every aspect of the planet we live on and the way in which we live and cope with trauma. Every topic you can think of is covered, including ancestral lineage and the afterlife. It also includes helpful exercises that you can complete yourself that provide a deeper meaning and appreciation of the topics covered. The topics may be triggering for those who have suffered with previous trauma and pain but trigger warnings are provided on how to safely perform the exercises that are there to aid and help the reader. This book provides possible healing and comfort to emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical health, so it is a definite recommended read. Trevor also supplies an abundance of healing tools that can cater to anyone reading it, as it is clear that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to one’s own healing journey. (Rebecca Wade)
