This book introduces the reader to Jason Bottelli, a young, dynamic and gifted saxophonist. The story quickly takes us through his daily life: performing at Fats, a jazz club, and teaching students at Impervious University. He establishes himself as a multi-talented character who seems to get along with everyone.
The pacing moves quickly from Jason setting up his band for a talent contest, training them, and him confronting various obstacles that are thrown his way. The scenes move efficiently from one plot point to another. The style is crisp and while we mainly follow Jason, we get a peek at some of the ancillary characters as well. Everyone mostly stands out, in particular Vincent, Kipper, Georgie and Christopher. There are some unexpected curveballs that affect the characters,– such as the team deciding to split up, — and they are treated in a realistic way. The dynamics between the characters are warm and authentic, even if they’re not elaborated on at length.
This was a fun read and gives the reader a glimpse into the London music world via a sympathetic character who gives his all to make his, and his bands’ dream happen.
I award this book 4 stars.
