The Poisoned Garden written by Author Phill Featherstone, is a fantasy, family saga which engages the reader from the first page to the last. The plot is gripping with plenty of action and drama to satisfy the reader, as two sons, Jathan and Ragul, battle to become the successor of a dystopian city called Chamaris. The story is well written, moves at a good pace and keeps the reader invested. Fans of Game of Thrones by George RR Martin will surely enjoy, The Poisoned Garden, with its similar feel, of ruthless power play, abuse of wealth and position, family betrayals, deaths, sordid secrets, injustices, and revenge. Its exciting climax will certainly leave you wanting more.
The main protagonist, Jathan Peglar, is a well developed and extremely likeable character, one that the reader instantly roots for, although could cheerfully scream and shout at for his naivety and short sightedness, whilst at the same time desperately willing him on to succeed against his spiteful brother, Ragul. As far as antagonists go, Ragul is a great character, one that you will easily love to hate.
Each of these characters takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster ride as ‘Underdog’ Jathan, proves to himself and others, his worth, and claims his right to citizenship after completing three gruelling trials that are designed to test his endurance and faith. However, he is no match for Ragul who excels in the art of manipulation, lying and game playing, but could it be that someone else is pulling the strings and does the apple fall far from the tree?
With other dark forces at work, mysterious characters who seek to rise in power, and the threat of revenge by a community caught in the crossfire, The Poisoned Garden, is the beginning of what promises to be a captivating and exciting series.
I award a well deserved, 5 stars.
