Everybody says I look good on paper. I was adopted into the Winslow dragon clan, with their boatloads of status and wealth. I have loyal friends and a thriving surveillance business. And did I mention I’m built like a superhero? Only there’s so much more to my story. The truth is I’m damaged goods. I’m twenty-nine, and my dragon form is stuck in adolescence. I have no wings, I’m afraid to use my magic, and not even my best friend knows I’ve never had a lover. My parents are hellbent on mating me to a high society dragon. Before I can even consider marriage, I need to get back to the Ukrainian orphanage and figure out what the hell happened to me when I was a kid. But nothing’s ever simple. The orphanage sits dead center in the Transcarpathian Mountains--and any Magical who dares approach risks losing their powers to the Dragon King. Can I find the answers that release my wings? Or am I the next sacrificial lamb to the king’s insatiable appetite?

The Paper Dragon (Shifters in the Underland Series: Jake Winslow) by Author Coralie Moss – Book Review

Coralie’s Shifters in the Underland, an Urban Fantasy Series begins with, The Paper Dragon, a great introduction to the Dragon Shifters and a story that leaves you wanting more. So it is good to know that The Book Dragon Store has the entire series in stock so readers can move straight onto the next instalment!

Overall, The Paper Dragon, is a well written book, with interesting characters who have unique abilities, and are drawn into the protagonist, Jake’s, story as they come to his aid when he starts to delve deeper into his past, and makes some alarming discoveries. Whilst these new friends, both old and new, seem to be genuine in their support, it soon becomes apparent that they have their own hidden agendas, and not all is what it seems. The story builds at a good pace, and doesn’t address who is truly a friend and who is the real foe, through all its twists and turns. This leads nicely to the next book, The Blood Dragon, and keeps the readers engaged in the series.

My only slight disappointment with, The Paper Dragon, is that there did not appear to be any real conflict or challenge in Jake locating his newly discovered sibling who has been in hiding; and I felt the same when the Dragon King contacts Jake and pleads for his help.

The ease of such a connection, I struggled with as a reader. Whilst the delivery of this was okay, the Author has missed a great opportunity here to build some drama, tension & excitement for the reader. It all felt a little too easy, and convenient for Jake. I would loved to have seen more obstacles and difficulties placed in his path before finding her, and a lot more heightened drama around the Dragon King invading his thoughts. Although I did find the developing relationship between the 2 siblings quite charming.

I enjoyed reading, The Paper Dragon, and so I am awarding 4 stars.
