The Dwarves’ Dilemma is a take on the classic Snow White fairy tale, but instead of a vain and wicked queen who uses the mirror to confirm her beauty, the queen in this story uses the mirror to confirm the fairness of a judgement. When two dwarves come to her to judge which of them is right, Queen Mabel is puzzled when it looks like they are both right. How can this be? She sends Snow White to investigate and what she discovers will change the way the Queen makes judgements forever.
This delightful story explores the concept of fairness and seeing issues from a different perspective. There is also a page at the end that shows how a mirror works – a real one, not one that detects the sparkle of fairness!
The characters are written well and have an arc of growth, despite the shortness of the story. Dialogue is snappy and moves the story along. This is a well-paced story that children will love to read, or have it read to them. The stories are illustrated by delightfully simple and colourful pictures by Ada Konewki. With nothing to detract from the experience, I award this book 5 stars.
