The Demons Within (Maingard Chronicles Book 2) By Author Carl F. Northwood – Book Review

“The Demons Within” picks up hot on the tail of events from book 1. We continue to follow the tragic consequences after the invasion of Maingard. The enemy are hellbent on destruction and slavery, and have made a violent statement of intent with the destruction of two cities, the so called ‘Jewels of the East’. The stakes are high as ever in this sequel; the impending subjugation of Mainguard, traitors in every corner, and betrayal follow all our characters.

Recurring characters are a treat to read; we encounter Bex/Ishtara, Garlen, and Jerone to name a few as they follow their destiny and truly discover what power they possess. Their dialogue is as ever original and authentic. We are introduced to new characters, or get more insight on previous characters such as Garlen, or his mother the Queen. The characters are well-layered in each chapter.

The plot and pacing are well-crafted, and nowhere does it feel like the action drags. The story flows from one character to another. The stakes are incredibly high and no character is above death. The ending leaves one’s heart racing. I can’t wait to read more from this series!

I award this book 5 stars
