“I thought the gods were not allowed to interfere with mortals…”
Man versus God? Vice versa? Glen Dahlgren weaves an intriguing tale about the fragility of humankind. How it bends to a will not of its own volition. That somehow a deep cut has been already drawn in the sand, a path to be followed, a fate pre-destined.
Glen Dahlgren has such a vivid imagination, somewhat macabre at times as demonstrated. To avoid spoilers, here’s my edited quote, so as not to reveal the fate of a particular character, of such a scene:
“He ripped the mask off…There was nothing left…face was gone, leaving an unbroken, whitish blank blob of skin. Instead, the mask held…features…his last expression of terror captured and frozen…”
“How long? How long must I wear this face?”
I enjoyed the imagery, the eeriness, of the characters. Such cruelty…
“Don’t get too comfortable,” the priestess said from the window. “I’ll be back for one of you soon. Until then, you can all worry about who it will be.” She laughed as she walked away.
Our beloved characters must question their inner strength, their beliefs, the very power they possess to be different, and to shake off their fears. To question authority and its ruling in the grand scheme of the future.
A very enjoyable fantasy story that I award 4 stars.
