The Boy with the Dancing Bells by Deshis Create – Book Review

Inspirational and motivating, The Boy with the Dancing Bells is a fascinating insight into the life of Akram Khan, kathak and contemporary dancer, told in picture book format.

In the world today there are so many inspiring people that we often don’t hear about; this story both celebrates diversity and brings to light the talent of an individual from a community not as widely understood in the UK. His story is one that shows us all it’s ok to follow your passions, and that with hard work and determination, you can make a difference and achieve your dreams.

Captured within the pages, the illustrations help bring the book to life in order for young children to visualise both Akram and his dancing. The colours aren’t especially bright but yet they fit the tone and mood of the story.

Definitely one for older primary-aged children, this book contains more challenging vocabulary at times although the general structure of the sentences is quite simple meaning most should be able to access them. However, this does mean the story flows at a fairly even pace throughout rather than be filled with the excitement I would have liked to have to leapt out the pages.
