This is the fourth book in the Tally and the Angel series, set in Greece, and aimed at 8–12-year-olds. On this occasion, the book has an apt title… The Sands of Time. These books are best read in order, but the author includes a helpful ‘catch-up’ section at the beginning to assist new readers.
Tally, an adventurous young teen, and her surgeon dad are taking a holiday in Greece. She is accompanied by her protective angel, Jophiel, contained in her pendant.
After an attention-grabbing prologue, we are immersed in the setting of the story – a Greek beach resort. Tally meets Theo and discovers a similarity… their mothers have recently died. She also befriends Theo’s friend, Artemis, whose parents own a diving school, which is significant to the storyline.
We are quickly drawn into the intriguing world of Greek mythology and the fascinating appeal of marine life. These two aspects combine to create an action-packed, fast-moving adventure for Tally, and like the previous books, her exploits revolve around helping others with the help of her angel, Jophiel.
We are introduced to time-warp moments, giving underlying hints to further developments. The plot develops cohesively, then the fantasy element evolves. This will hold great appeal for the targeted age group.
The author’s writing style is comprehensive… the characters are lifelike; the setting descriptions are vivid, and the dialogue and emotions are realistic. Tally continues to learn ‘life lessons’ from her experiences.
Alongside the educational elements of Greek food, language and customs, this book provides another exciting, short-chapter adventure, which makes for a page-turning read.
I award 5 stars.
