Sullen Heights is the fictional story of London’s homeless charity, told from the perspective of manager, Helena. There are many residents at Sullen Heights, all of whom have varying troubles, lives and personalities. Helena runs the show with help from three of her favourite people, Maggie, Maureen and Marjorie, whom she has lovingly nicknamed ‘the witches’. The trio of old busybodies behave more like her aunts than staff. Together they see to the needs of the vulnerable under their care. The witches also want to help Helena with her personal and private life, even though she has made the lives of her residents more of a priority than her own. Some people never leave the hostel and it becomes their permanent home; as Helena has decided when she gives up her expensive flat that she never sees to spend time in.
I loved the characters’ interaction with each other, and with Helena. The tale is one of a Happy Ending, which a lot of readers actively seek. There is a bit of everything in this book, and I do recommend it to readers. I award 4 stars.
