Helena runs the show but not without the help of her favourite people; Maggie, Maureen and Marjorie that she has lovingly nicknamed ‘the witches’. Three old busy bodies that behave more like her aunts, than staff. They are always medalling in her life, for what they feel is them helping but Helena feels she needs help. It’s her job to help others. And to help the homeless find a home.Helena and ‘the witches’ see to the needs of the needy and are more like family to the residents and staff. There are a few special people along the way that touch Helena’s heart and they become more important to her than her blood family. Her mother and father disapprove of the career she has chosen and are always putting her down for not marrying and settling down and having children, but to Helena she felt there was more need for her to do good in other people’s lives than to make a family of her own.The manager role is a lonely job filled with responsibilities. She turns the word ‘workaholic’ into an understatement when she finally decided to give up her crummy one bedroom flat that costs the earth that she never uses. She takes the plunge and turns Sullen Heights into her full time home as well as her place of work. She lives and breathes what she does, and it’s never easy. Between running the hostel, dealing with violent thugs and pregnant teenagers she finds herself too busy to even think straight; let alone date or have a real man in her life. Her job is to help people back on their feet so they can move on with their lives and find homes of their own; these were the people that made her job all the more important. But for some people; like Helena, never leave Sullen Heights. Not when Sullen Heights becomes your home.

Sullen Heights By Author Ophelia Gold – Book Review

Sullen Heights is the fictional story of London’s homeless charity, told from the perspective of manager, Helena. There are many residents at Sullen Heights, all of whom have varying troubles, lives and personalities. Helena runs the show with help from three of her favourite people, Maggie, Maureen and Marjorie, whom she has lovingly nicknamed ‘the witches’. The trio of old busybodies behave more like her aunts than staff. Together they see to the needs of the vulnerable under their care. The witches also want to help Helena with her personal and private life, even though she has made the lives of her residents more of a priority than her own. Some people never leave the hostel and it becomes their permanent home; as Helena has decided when she gives up her expensive flat that she never sees to spend time in.

I loved the characters’ interaction with each other, and with Helena. The tale is one of a Happy Ending, which a lot of readers actively seek. There is a bit of everything in this book, and I do recommend it to readers. I award 4 stars.
