Shades of White By Author Tom Boles – Book Review

In Shades of White, the second book in the Brad Willis Series by Author Tom Boles, the author brings back some of my favourite characters from his first book, Dark Energy and adds a few new ones into the mix. Not least the main protagonist, Brad Willis who finds himself in a very different environment this time around. Through characterisation, dialogue and interaction he brings together an eclectic mix of individuals really well. The main characters are very believable and fit right in to the story and supplemented by secondary characters the reader never quite knows who to trust until the very end. The story moves at a good pace throughout. The dialogue works well throughout the book and suits the characters interacting. Emotions are conveyed well through speech and add depth to the story and the personalities. Action, romance, camaraderie all portray well through the different personalities and effective dialogue.

The sense of mystery interspersed with action scenes works well to keep the reader guessing. What really makes this book stand out for me is the location setting. Set almost entirely in Antarctica, the reader gets a great sense of how extreme the conditions are there, but also the community at the base station who really belong where they are. Well edited throughout and nothing to detract from the reader following the story.

I award 4 stars.
