Rise of the Lesser Prince By Author Christopher Joyce – Book Review

This is a novel in the epic fantasy genre and will appeal to fans accordingly. This really is a fantastic read from start to finish. Characters are really well defined and the author centres around several key characters including the main protagonist, Prince Valadin – the Lesser Prince. The clever way the author brings in additional characters such as Xebus of the Asarlai (my favourite character), all with a part to play in the developing plot is also very much appreciated. With plenty of depth to each characters’ story this really allows the reader to engage with each. Dialogue is appropriate for the setting and varied to suit each character. Well scripted interactions add to the situations and relationships between characters and at no point did I feel the dialogue did not add something to the story. The pace flows well from suspenseful scenes to high octane action. The final battle really is something to behold and I refuse to believe anyone reading would not become fully immersed. Warning: there are plot twists aplenty and these serve to keep the reader on edge, but also wanting to keep turning the pages. Just when you think you are nearing the end of the story the reader will realise there is still plenty of book to finish. This is where the author takes us back in time to the events unfolding for Prince Vinadan. Initially I did wonder why this was done in the way it was, but it seems to work. Perhaps the author wants us to understand the actions of Prince Vinadan or perhaps he wants us to accept that perhaps some characters are simply evil. I’ll leave you to decide that for yourselves.

I award this book 5 stars and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
