Rise of the Hunter is the first book in the Dark Prophecy series by Author Barb Jones and picks up where the Blood Prophecy Series left off with the characters of Amber, Chloe, Marcus, Malakai and Zaraquel. Queen Amber and her supernatural friends are unaware of the prophecy that foretold of 3 battles to come, and in the final Blood Prophecy book, The Queen’s Ascension, believe that they have successfully vanquished the Tall Dark man. However in Rise of the Hunter, his time has only just begun, and having set wheels in motion he is preparing for the third and final battle which will secure his victory and see him rule over all of the supernatural beings that exist in their world.
Fans of the series so far will certainly enjoy reconnecting with the characters they have come to love in the Blood Prophecy trilogy, and will be interested to see how each of them and their relationships evolve, and are tested further in light of the new threat rising. As the author sets their new course and the background to the latest prophecy, readers are moved through the story at a quick pace, and taken backwards and forwards in time as the story threads are cast and woven. Some of these threads provide a fascinating incite into the past and ancient traditions, yet there may be a sense of frustration for some readers who like to have all the pieces of the puzzle at once, as to how these all connect together. The transitions between each of the characters as readers are moved along through the differing scenes and events can at times be a little confusing although do hold a promise of the excitement to come. It may have been more beneficial to have concentrated on certain characters at a time and then move to the others with narration to connect it all together and make the transition between their story and the parts they play within the prophecy smoother, but that is my own personal view. There is a lot going on in the story and threads left unresolved which no doubt will be addressed in subsequent books. Readers are advised to read Rise of the Hunter as close to one sitting as possible so as not to lose track of what is happening.
I have enjoyed reading Rise of the Hunter and I award 4 stars.
