Monster Makes a Friend by Julia Stebbing’ is a picture book, for 3-7 year olds, takes us on an adventure where Mitzi Mouse meets a monster while playing outside. Themed in friendship, kindness and understanding, the language complexity is kept simple to afford a flowing narrative structure and introduce emotional depth. Excellent large and colourful illustrations provide visual engagement throughout. Together with the author’s storytelling, this book stimulates emotional resonance. Potentially, I believe this book will encourage reading and support learning, with the additional colouring pages at the back of the book.
I’d recommend this book, either to read alone so as to help develop skills, or as a group read in school, or a bedtime read. Parents and teachers can use each illustration and/or scene as discussion points. Additional colouring pages at the end of the book create fun supplementary activities, encouraging individual creativity.
