Like Water by M J Whyman is a gripping tale of Mercutio and Romeo, two boys growing up together – one (Romeo) so loved and benefiting from an ordinary life, and the other so badly treated at home that he longs to have what his friend has. They become almost brothers, looking out for each other, and the love they feel is alas the thing that changes over time. Mercutio and Romeo aren’t meant to be star-crossed lovers, and each knows that life can be cruel and complicated. We aren’t entirely sure what is going on in Mercutio’s current life as the story plays out from their childhood and giving us glimpses of what is happening now, and there is room for a sequel. There is also room for re-formatting of the book, and some errors have also crept in, but these can easily be addressed by the author. Overall, I award 4 stars.
