Ladybugs for Loretta By Author Lois Wickstrom – Book Review

By Phoebe Wilby

Cover Blurb:

Loretta is a mischievous girl who lives in a cabin high up in the Colorado mountains. She loves her garden and the ladybugs that protect it. But where do they go in the winter? On a cold winter day when she was collecting pine needles for her strawberry patch, she discovered ladybugs hiding under a rock. There were even more behind a chunk of loose tree bark. Through a loving relationship with her parents and her garden, Loretta learns about the life cycle of ladybugs.

Ladybugs for Loretta By Author Lois Wickstrom – Book Review

Lois Wikstrom’s Ladybugs for Loretta is the story of a curious little girl who, once she learns how helpful ladybugs are, decides to store them over the winter so they will help her garden in the spring. Halfway through winter and not only Loretta’s fridge is full of hibernating ladybugs, but so are her neighbours! Lucky ladybugs are a gardener’s friend, as Loretta’s mother tells her.
Like a lot of Lois’s stories, this story has a science bend to it, tricking the young reader into learning something new while having fun. After all, isn’t that the best way to educate anyone? Francie Mion’s delightful illustrations bring an already colourful story to life. I’d like to see this, and other Lois Wikstrom’s books as part of the curriculum, or at least in the libraries of all schools in the English-speaking world. I award this book 5 stars.
