A cute and captivating Christmas adventure for younger readers is contained within the pages of this book – definitely one for the festive season!
It’s Christmas Eve and the hoglets are decorating their Christmas tree only to be faced with the prospect of a broken star! What follows is an adventure in the woods at night as they endeavour to help Santa and solve their own problem. The courage and keenness of the hedgehog brother and sister spring out from the pair in every page and you can’t help but root for them as they set about on their mission. The story is pacy and engaging with plenty of relevant details to keep little ones both amused and informed as the tale develops.
A little on the lengthy side for a picture book, the story would do well being read in stages with younger readers or as a book for emerging readers to take on themselves. It may have been better to have less text per page as it does appear quite heavy on the word front alongside the pictures. The illustrations are appealing for the most part with bold colours and outlines that will be attractive for little eyes. I was also quite impressed with the backgrounds included in the book.
Overall, a gorgeous festive tale for children that The Book Dragon had the pleasure of reviewing on behalf of the author. We award it a well-deserved 4 stars.
