When hundreds of huge holes mysteriously appeared overnight in the frozen tundra north of the Arctic Circle, geologist Jack Oswald picked Angele Menendez, his climatologist wife, to determine if the record temperatures due to climate change was the cause. But the holes were not natural. These hell holes were unnatural portals for an invading army of demons. Together with Aileen O’Shannon, a 1,700-year-old sorceress demon-hunter, the three survivors of the research team sent to study the holes had only one chance: to flee down the dangerous Dalton Highway towards the relative safety of Fairbanks. However, the advancing horde of devils, imps, hellhounds, and gargoyles will stop at nothing to prevent their prey from escaping. It is a 350-mile race with simple rules. Win and live; lose and die…

Hell Holes: Demons on the Dalton: Volume 2 By Author Donald Firesmith – Book Review

The second book doesn’t stop for breath, taking off where we left the characters in book 1. This approach rather suits the series.

The scientist couple at the centre of the tale, Jack and Angie, are growing in determination as their race progresses. They, and the reader, learn more about the Order from Aileen, a curatrix of the centuries who has been battling the Hell demons since the tender age of 12, learning how to stay alive in their struggle to win against an unstoppable force through traditional resources.

The series is a horror sci-fi but extremely well written, so it is not the sort of thing I’d usually read or enjoy – but I did. Like the first book there are some errors that would distract a reader, the plot moves at a steady pace and believable and horrifyingly realistic. The characters are realistic with credible dialogue. Overall, I award 5 stars.
