Fiskers and the Goblin City By Author Deryth Vine – Book Review

With old-world vibes reminiscent of a Beatrix Potter story, Fiskers and the Goblin City takes us on a magical adventure through woodland realms of talking animals, goblins and water sprites.

The concept for the story is a nice one in terms of taking younger readers on a magical adventure although I feel that the target audience may not be as hooked by the book. Told in a very traditional way, the book reminded me of the ways of A. A. Milne and Enid Blyton with the language and dialogue very comparable with times gone by rather than the more modern tone that current children may relate better to. This language choice along with the fairly simple plot line does mean that the book isn’t as engaging as it could be. However, the cliffhanger ending is intriguing and certainly got me wondering what might happen next.

Fiskers is a likeable character, determined and kind throughout, which, as the book alludes to, is consistent with the previous stories in the series. Greta the grass snake was also an enjoyable character, and her personality in the book a well-developed one, although the remaining characters were a little simplistic.

When reading the book, there are rather a lot of editing errors specifically in terms of punctuation so it would be advisable for adults to perhaps read this book with their child to allow for any discussion around the incorrect use of commas and so on.

Overall, the author has produced an interesting idea for story that could do with more depth to engage more readers. The Book Dragon reviewed this book on behalf of the author and awards it 3 stars
