PCT Bounty hunter Dakota del Toro knows the local vampire coven and their pet werewolves are to blame, but the badge she carries means she requires pesky things like admissible evidence and warrants to act—however when a bereaved mother comes to Dakota for help in recovering her daughter from the Lobos Diablos gang this bounty hunter will risk her career, her freedom, and her very life to bring Pilar Guzmán home. Diego de Gama seems too good to be true—a handsome, wealthy, gallery owner who can dance and behave like a gentleman? What century is he from, anyway? On a night out on the town with the girls Dakota thinks she’s found a keeper, but Diego has a secret that could turn the archaic power structure of Santa Fe’s vampires on its head. However, he knows he can’t do it alone—and who would make a better compañera than the Cazadora herself? If only he could stop kissing her long enough to ask her…

Companera (Dakota Del Toro) by Author Julia Debarrioz – Book Review

The Book Dragon received a copy of Companera directly from the Author, Julia Debarrioz via the Voracious Readers Website, in exchange for an honest review.

Companera had me hooked from Page 1, although concentration is needed in the early stages to keep up with the pace and character introduction.

Set in New Mexico against a backdrop of werewolves and vampires, main protagonist, Dakota Del Torro is a feisty, believable, and human, heroine. She leads the action from beginning to end with style and panache. If you like your monsters tall, dark, and handsome, then this is the book for you.

Excellent double blinds in the early chapters, where the reader strives to fathom the goodies from the baddies, and the plot kept me involved all the way.

A little distracting was the author’s over-use of italics to emphasise speech or thoughts. I would urge her to trust the strength of her writing and use this technique less. Also the phrase ‘…paid him a smile/hard look/grin…’ appeared too frequently, particularly early in the book, and pulled me out of the story. These niggles, however, were minor, and easily corrected for Dakota’s future adventures.

A wonderful read for any who enjoy the fantasy, horror, or action/adventure genres, and I look forward to reviewing any further ‘Companera’ instalments on behalf of The Book Dragon in the future. I award 4 stars.
