Steven delivers an intimate and haunting collection of poems that explore topics not usually encountered in your average day to day poetry. He doesn’t hesitate to talk about passing time, grief, death and mortality. Even in the context of love, the tone is dark and self-aware of everything being ephemeral. The author’s mood and voice resonate quite clearly throughout this collection; it is contemporary but has a classic feel to it too. The poems’ various structures keep the content interesting. The theme is tightly woven in and the poems flow. A Posthumous Letter and The Procession seem like stand alones; almost jarring but yet they fit regardless despite the different structure.
This collection will indeed keep you awake and has a bitter aftertaste but it is welcomed as we all in some form or another think of our own mortality.
