With tongue-in-cheek humour throughout, this slimy tale will have you smirking from the get go whilst also leaving you with a few quiz question factoids!
Buster Sluggless, the meanest slug in the garden (and also the saddest) is our main protagonist and he’s instantly painted as the bad guy – small children will instantly be hoping for his downfall (don’t worry, it comes). As the book says, ‘he was a rude, crude, shrewd, slimy dude’! However, the slug ultimately changes his ways and with it, small children will learn a valuable lesson about bullying.
The language used throughout is both amusing and yet quirky but not so difficult that smaller children won’t understand (although they may need the odd word explained by an adult) and the author is very good at peppering his story with jokes that directly address the reader and make them feel a part of the plot line.
The illustrations are bright and vibrant, and produced by the author’s son, but it would have been nice to have seen them cover the entire page rather than be confined to a single box as it gave the impression that the entire book was a bit of a word document. However, with formatting and editing, this is easy enough to rectify.
Slimy and disgusting yet amusing and witty, The Book Dragon reviewed this book on behalf of the author and awards it 4 stars.
