Hannah McBride’s “Broken” is a captivating novella set in the Blackwater Pack series, offering readers a deep dive into the complex relationship between Rhodes DeWitt and Larkin Dawes. This emotionally charged story explores themes of unrequited love, personal struggles, and the courage it takes to pursue happiness. Set between books 1 and 2 of the Blackwater Pack series, “Broken” focuses on Rhodes, the Blackwater beta, and Larkin, the girl next door he’s always loved but believes he can’t have. As a blizzard rages outside, trapping them together, Rhodes must confront his feelings and decide whether to let Larkin go or fight for their chance at love. The author uses the isolated setting to create a pressure cooker of emotions, forcing the characters to face their feelings and fears head-on.

The heart of this novella lies in its well-developed characters: Rhodes DeWitt: The self-proclaimed “bad boy” beta of the Blackwater Pack, Rhodes’s tough exterior hides a vulnerable core. His complicated relationship with his alcoholic father adds depth to his character and explains his reluctance to commit. Larkin Dawes: The girl next door who’s been in love with Rhodes for years, Larkin is a sympathetic character caught between her head telling her to move on and her heart holding onto hope.

The angst-filled love story between Rhodes and Larkin is beautifully crafted, keeping readers emotionally invested and rooting for both characters to overcome their obstacles and find happiness together.

Hannah’s writing is engaging and well-paced, with credible dialogue that brings the characters to life. The novella format allows for a focused exploration of Rhodes and Larkin’s relationship without unnecessary subplots, maintaining tension throughout the story. “Broken” explores several compelling themes: The impact of family dysfunction on personal relationships, the struggle between self-preservation and vulnerability in love and the courage required to break cycles of behaviour and take emotional risks. These themes are woven seamlessly into the narrative, adding depth to the romance and character development.

This novella is perfect for fans of paranormal romance, werewolf fiction, angsty love stories and character-driven narratives. It’s important to note that the book contains mature themes and is recommended for readers 17 and older. “Broken” is a great addition to the Blackwater Pack series, offering a poignant and emotionally satisfying exploration of Rhodes and Larkin’s relationship. Hannah has crafted a story that balances steamy romance with genuine emotional depth, making it a must-read for fans of the series and newcomers alike. The novella’s ability to delve into Rhodes’s backstory and explain the reasons behind his “bad boy” persona adds layers to his character that will likely enhance readers’ enjoyment of the main series as well.
