This latest installment sees Will trying to settle back in regular life after the horrible experience of being forcibly drafted into the wars. However, things are far from smooth on his return. Tensions arise between David Garrick and a fellow actor, all the while Sir William Hervey assigns Will on a new venture: the disappearance of the son of a wealthy Jewish family. The case is far from simple, as old secrets and new twists keep appearing, putting Will’s life and those close to him at risk. As ever, our old cast of characters are a delight; and the newer cast of characters are interesting and multi-dimensional. Eston does an excellent job crafting nuanced characters and even making us feel sympathy for the more unlikeable ones. The dialogue is smooth and polished and true to character. The plot is interesting and takes one in wild directions; the buildup is a bit slow, but the payoff is astounding; the stories get more and more complex and morally challenging as Will ages and learns more about spywork.
Another delightful read from this series!
