An ABC book of Animals: An ABC book of quirky, awesome, colourful Animals By Georgina & Herbie Cracknell – Book Review

This book is a delightful and, in the author’s own words, “quirky” take on a typical alphabet book, in a similar vein to “P is for Pterodactyl” by Raj Haldar and Chris Carpenter. The front cover is colourful and well-spaced, drawing children in with delightful illustrations, a bright, eye-catching yellow background and engaging, clearly drawn lettering, as well as an example of the ‘child-like’ and engaging illustrations utilised throughout.

The book is exceptionally well edited, the hand-drawn lettering is clear, well-drawn and consistent throughout. I’m not sure I would have used ellipsis following each “I am a/an” but that’s more personal preference. Use of unusual words and animals (i.e. ‘opossum’ for O, a personal favourite) keep the target audience’s attention in a sea of “A if for apples”.

Where the book really shines is its beautiful illustrations, clearly either drawn by or inspired by the drawings of the author’s son Herbie. These drawings are whimsical and funny, and will clearly engage the target audience, what they lose in anatomical accuracy they make up for in charm.

I award ‘An abc book of quirky, awesome, colourful animals’ 5 stars.
