A Company of Adventurers is a fantasy novel with a Lord of the Rings vibe that introduces readers to the character of Talen, the main protagonist. Talen used to be a famous swordsman but has settled as a farm hand to care for his family, but when news reaches him of a cursed suit of golden armour in the possession of Orcs, he cannot resist one last adventure. Talen travels to recruit a misfit crew with differing special abilities to aid him in retrieving the armour. However he is soon betrayed and doesn’t return home. His wife Lia, must then follow in her husbands footsteps to find out what has happened to him, with the support of Talen’s rival a berserker called Mick who is searching for his missing brothers.
Overall this is a well written tale, with credible world building and an interesting plot that moves at a good pace. The characters are fascinating and their personalities are well developed making it easy for readers to establish a positive connection and invest in their stories. There is clearly more excitement and drama to come, this being the first book in the series. There are some minor typo and editing issues but not enough to distract a reader or pull them out of the story.
A very enjoyable read and I look forward to the next instalment. I award 4.5 stars.
