A lovely concept to introduce young children to both counting and the insect world, 1,2,3 Count bugs with me is filled with facts.
Consistent in its layout and appearance, the author presents the child with a fact and the bugs it wants the child to find on one page before giving them a subsequent page on which to locate and count the insects. The facts are age-appropriate and interesting, helping children to understand the common features of the insects they are counting. A couple could have been phrased slightly better but on the whole, they were engaging and added a layer to the book that took it beyond a simple counting experience.
The pictures and images included were quite bright and cartoonish, and I feel the book would have benefitted from a slightly softer approach with illustrations. It gave the whole thing a very computer-generated feel and if it’s a timeless book the author is aiming for, human illustrations often fit the brief better.
Overall, a lovely foray into the world of number and science. The Book Dragon had the opportunity to review this book on behalf of the author and awards it 4 stars.
