Unceremonious by Red Cape Publishing is a horror anthology of tales each told by a different author but entwined under a common theme. Thirteen characters are nominated for the Film Flair Awards and there can only be one winner. Each story centre’s on a protagonist who will do anything to win. The stories really pulled a lot of emotions out of me as a reader, especially when you don’t agree with what certain characters are doing. But that is the beauty and horror of wanting to win. The author’s portray fantastically, just how desperate their protagonist is, how they would do anything and everything to win, how much collateral damage they would cause, how much death or misery they would inflict on those around them to aid in achieving their dreams. The pace of each story is different depending on how engaged you are with that specific character and the events that are unfolding, but each author moves the story along in a concise way whilst also making the story interesting and eerie. My only critique is not of the writing itself but just because I have a weak disposition for certain events that take place. I can’t say much more without giving each story away, but this is definitely a recommended read.
I award 5 stars.
