If No One Speaks is a short story collection and debut novel written by Author Sam Szanto. Each story has a running thread of displacement or alienation of the female protagonists featured, and their resilience and ability to cope with or overcome their adversity. Many readers will find that they can emotionally connect with and resonate with each of these characters and their individual story’s, and in some cases will be left wanting more.
My favourite stories in this collection being, ‘If No One Speaks,’ ‘Mikey,’ ‘Don’t Refuse Me,’ and ‘My Sister the Murderer.’ Fascinating, thought provoking and well written tales with plenty of drama and tension throughout to keep readers engaged and riding that emotional rollercoaster we all love to experience in a good story. The dialogue is relevant and the individual characters are credible and considered sufficiently developed, bearing in mind that these are only short stories. The plot moves forward at a good pace, although in some cases the reader may find this too quick and may be disappointed when the ending is reached. Not necessarily a negative point although some stories are noticeably longer than others and do provide a more detailed read and therefore a much more satisfying ending.
The author has a great writing voice and style that shines throughout. My only critique is related to the formatting and font size of the book, as this is quite small and may be difficult for some readers who struggle with eyesight problems but it’s an easy fix by the Author.
I enjoyed reading this entire collection particularly the stories with a supernatural theme, and so I award 4 stars.
