In Behind the Smile, Janet shares her story of some of the darkest times during her childhood where she experienced abuse, and how this impacted on her life and the person that she is today. Janet also within this memoir shares her recent exploration into childhood abuse and trauma and how this links to illness and the connection to the immune system. She also includes Letters to those who played a significant part in both her trauma and healing and the lessons that she has learnt throughout her life.
When I first read her second book ‘Letters to Ian’ which I was drawn to personally reading and reviewing first, I felt a strong connection with the Author and was overwhelmed by the many similarities I shared. Having read ‘Behind the Smile’ there are no words to describe the emotional connection that I feel and how much reading her words has mean’t to me. I remember saying in my last book review my belief that certain people are sent and placed in our paths for a reason. And now reading Janet’s book ‘Behind the Smile’ this has never been more true. I can see how Janet’s beliefs, understanding and experiences closely align to my own, and this brings a measure of comfort, especially when you feel on your own and that no one could possibly understand.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Janet’s writing is always delivered sensitively, and in a way that anyone who has shared the same experiences will take comfort in, encouragement, hope and I truly believe will be equally guided along a path towards healing. After I read Janet’s books I was inspired to write my own story, having witnessed how cathartic this has been for her as the author and how much it has benefitted me as a reader in a way that no words can adequately explain.
As a fellow Fibromyalgia Warrior, I am further proof of the connection between childhood trauma and this condition, which became more aggressive and life changing when a significant Trauma triggered this and brought up past traumatic events. More awareness needs to be raised and this condition needs to be understood better.
Finally the quotes in Janet’s books resonate so much and I am grateful to her for sharing these. I will be too be sharing them with others, who I am sure will appreciate them as much as I have, and it is a shame that we don’t know who some of these authors are.
I am awarding 5 stars.
