So many stories and experiences makes super cool, yet weird adventures
Strange Trips and Weird Adventures by John Walker Pattison is a standalone novel and was a fun and exciting adventure. This was the story of a boy and his grandfather. Papa has been on many adventures and loved to share his stories with Daniel. One day Papa decided to take Daniel on an adventure of his own, together. How weird will things get on this super strange trip?
From its roots, this is such a touching story! It shows a strong relationship between a grandfather and grandson. Through connecting to each other, they create awesome memories and end up on a really weird adventure. Not only is the adventure interesting, it was also educational. As they ended up in different places, Daniel learned history.
Having the combination of educational and emotional connection showed that there are many ways to learn. Experiential learning is another way. There was also problem solving built into the story. There’s so much for young readers to get from this story and it doesn’t matter that the child is a boy. This can apply to anyone.
The biggest thing that stood out as an issue was the structure of the story. The pages appeared like they were one big paragraph. Separating the paragraphs with a space, especially since the font puts the lines closer together, would open it up. This is for younger readers and most of them are probably newer to this level of novel, so it could be intimidating for them.
With all of that said, the visuals help to balance out the words. All of the illustrations were so beautifully designed and were super vibrant. I loved how they added to the story and gave a bit more for the readers to process. There may have been something mentioned that the reader may not be fully aware of yet, so having the visuals to supplement the words enhances their reading experience. Great job!
I’d recommend this for 9-11yr olds as well as younger readers with assistance. It’s also great for anyone who loves adventures, learning about the sea and new places will love this!
I award, Strange Trips and Weird Adventures, 4 stars.
