With just the right amount of wit and humour you’d expect from an Ian Slatter novel mixed with a dollop of fancy footwork, Danny Mann Super Fan is a book to get your football-mad children hooked on reading.
We meet Danny in yet another rubbish match as he tries to desperately retain an optimistic mindset towards his home team’s run of terrible performances. Feeling miserable and forever being tormented by other kids at school over the strong possibility his team are going down, he takes matters into his own hands. The plot line moves quickly without omitting details and you can’t help but turn the pages even if you’re not the biggest supporter of the sport! Ian Slatter knows his stuff when it comes to football, and the commentary and lingo used throughout delivers an authentic vibe that will keep readers engaged.
Danny is a believable and likeable underdog, the child we all knew in the playground who was a true football fan and didn’t just support the big names but instead showed a devoted loyalty to their local club. What’s more, he’s just your typical young boy obsessed with the beautiful game and many youngsters will be able to relate to him. His sidekick Nelson is just as much fun and another strong protagonist in the plot line.
An excellent read for 8+ year olds and a book that may just possibly get reluctant readers into the sport of words, The Book Dragon thoroughly enjoyed this story. Reviewed on behalf of the author, we award it 5 stars.
