The Book Tour

Day 1 - Favourite Quotes

‘I’m not a big fan of being outside in those conditions. My tootsies are quite delicate. I mean really, would YOU go outside in bare feet during a deep freeze to drop off a peemail?’ (Benjamin)
I would never have turned to an Intentional Squish (Spooky)
My eyelids settled into place so smoothly I wasn’t just the spoon in the peanut butter jar - I was the peanut butter. (Poppy)
As I turned to leave, Maple Lane barked, “You better practice a LOT, Mrs. Strugglesworth!” (Bella)
I worry that someday we will find him frozen to the back porch and I will be called upon to lick him until the ice melts from his flip-flops and he can get back inside. (Shiba)
I wanted to catch up with the news of the day. I crossed my paws for good luck, hoping that they'd been a response from the falsely accused, who was my first potential client. (Albie)
Crunchy sidetracked me with a hug. Curse my huggable-ness! Couldn't she see I had work to do? (Meeko)

Day 2 - Character Summaries

My favourite character has to be Mrs R Snugglesworth. absolutely adored her. The way in which the author describes her thoughts, and feelings in the telling of the story, with such humour and warmth is an utter joy to read. A dog with a big heart but full of sass, and despite the ego, you simply cannot help but love her.  (Benjamin)

Mrs R Snuggleworth... of course! Mrs R Snuggleworth, with her many chins and sky-high confidence, was my favourite character,  although all the doggy personalities were well-rounded and memorable. I loved Mrs R’s many ‘I am the best at…’ comments. The fact that her best and worst traits were explained, from a doggy perspective, made me smile and look to my own pooch’s behaviour. Her genuine attempts to gather evidence for the case being foiled constantly by her love of naps and tummy rubs was a joy. (Spooky)

Daft and loveable, Pitter-Patter the great dane is definitely a character that ‘pawed’ out! Although a great-dane described as extra-tall, it is easy to infer that this is one loyal and gentle pooch who is especially fond of his owner. As the book progresses and we get to know Pitter-Patter more, we can see how his friendship and true-hearted nature never goes amiss, no matter the situation. I loved the fact that, in the latter stages of the book, this loyalty is extended to Mrs. R. herself even when she’s not exactly the most honest! If you google great danes, they’re referred to as loyal, lively, loving gentle giants and the author has definitely capitulated on her research, creating a character that is the very embodiment of these personality traits. I’m always a fan of the underdog, or the one who’s fighting to clear their name when they’ve been wrongly accused and so, my heart went out immediately to Pitter-Patter especially given how desperate he was to make his owner happy despite the fact his owner had sent him to the doghouse! We’ve all been in places where we feel a bit down in the dumps or we’ve been blamed for something that wasn’t necessarily our fault, meaning Pitter-Patter was an extremely relatable and likeable character. I loved the way that the author had created a desperate tone to his voice as he fought for support and justice when he was facing a ‘cruel’ dog-style sentencing, although I think in places, a little bit more informality wouldn’t have gone amiss. Then again, having never spoken to a great dane, who am I to judge? Definitely a character worth rooting for, Pitter-Patter will definitely steal a heart or two. Now no doggy judge can blame him for that. (Poppy)

It’s hard not to fall in love with Mrs. R. Snugglesworth (Attorney-at-Law). After all, she is ‘70 pounds of low-to-the-ground PRECIOUS.’  I immediately found myself picturing her voice in my head as I read the book.  She is haughty and self-assured in a way that I found very endearing – the sort of self-image that I can quite easily imagine from a beloved pet.  Despite being The Best at Nearly Everything, she is a character with flaws and foibles, and seeing the world through her eyes is a delightful and frequently hilarious experience. (Bella)

Mrs. R. Snugglesworth is a funny, entertaining character. Her daring and confident nature drags you into her adventures and makes you engage with the story. She is clever and inventive, and nothing can stop her. Mrs. R. Snugglesworth’s determination is a good example for children, who can learn from her audacity and eagerness to learn and progress. We can forgive her for always being available for a power nap or for forgetting her promises as soon as she smells a Grassy Old Fish. Although she can be seen as arrogant at some points, she receives a valuable lesson and is forced to do her best to achieve her objectives. It’s a character that, although simple, evolves with the story. The characters’ descriptions and backgrounds are not too complicated but give enough information to have a clear idea of their looks and personalities. Children will be able to easily imagine the characters without getting lost on long lists of adjectives. If you are familiar with dogs’ behaviours, Mrs. R. Snugglesworth thoughts and acts would inevitably make you laugh. A hilarious character you definitely fall in love with. (Shiba)

Mrs R.Snugglesworth is my favourite! The description of her is so vivid, I feel like I know her really well. I love the fact that although she doesn't always get things right the first time, she is able to maintain her self belief. I believe this is an important message to children that we can't always get things right the first time and that doesn't mean we should give up on ourselves. (Albie)

The perfectly precious Mrs R.Snugglesworth! She's incredibly engaging and charismatic and her wit is wonderful. I loved her observations on humans, other canines and the world around her. I found myself willing her to succeed, both for herself and her friends, and enjoyed her character development throughout the book. I very much look forward to finding out what adventures she will get up to in the sequel! (Meeko)

Day 3 - Favourite Excerpts

‘Canines of the jury, today we are gathered to hear the charges against Pitter-Patter, for the International Destruction of a Stuffed Animal. In this case, the stuffed animal is a forty-year old rabbit names Hiccup. Hiccup began his life with Mr Garcia, when Mr Garcia was just a small boy living on the other side of the world.’ (Benjamin)

I began my sprint towards the bar, furry-rhinoceros style. My bundle of adorable chins flapped against my chest. As I neared the bar, I jumped, stretching my front half forward as hard as I could. I felt my low-to-the-ground precious belly graze the top of the bar and then felt my back paws touch the ground. The bar wiggled jiggled… and STAYED IN PLACE! Yes! I did it! (Spooky)

A quick word about my family. Two of my family members are especially cool. Their human names are... hmmm. Something. I forget. In my head, I c all them Snickerdoodle Fuzzlebean (Snicker, for short), and Crunchy Potato Chip (Crunchy, for short). Snicker is eleven and Crunchy is eight. The other two? They are grown-ups. Snicker and Crunchy call them Mom and Dad, but in my head I call them The Kitchen and The Vacuum. I usually stick to dog food but occasionally The Kitchen drops something irresistible onto the tile, like a ham. A beautiful ham. I am the Best at Loving Ham, especially if it falls on the floor, which is where ham goes to soak up extra flavor. One time she dropped an Entire Ham... and you KNOW that I was on it in a flash! I dragged that treasure straight into the yard, for safety reasons that I cannot explain to you right now. I will say that on this occasion I realized that The Kitchen does not approve of Yard Ham. But then again, she never has understood fine dining. (Poppy)

‘WAIT A MINUTE.  I couldn’t know what Maple Lane would have done.  But I darn well know what I would’ve done.  In my distress over this case, I’d nearly forgotten that I am the Best at Resolving Conflicts!  PHEW.  I would never have turned to an Intentional Squish.  I would’ve invited a pestering fly to a BuzzBark event, where we could’ve gotten to know each other and learned what we had in common, like a shared dream of finding the lid open on a kitchen trash bin.’ (Bella)

“Toasty Banana Pancakes, what are you doing?” she  cooed, trying to coax me along. I tilted my chins up at her.  And then me and my adorable chins lay down smack in the  middle of the sidewalk. Was I proud of this? No. Did I have to do it? Absolutely. (Shiba)

My name is Mrs R. Snugglesworth, Attorney at Law. At four barks long it's a mouthful. I usually go by Mrs R. I'm a butter coloured English labrador retriever. Picture your standard, tallish, American labrador retriever, make her six inches shorter and add an extra bundle of snuggly chins. If that's too hard to imagine, just imagine seventy pounds of low to the ground precious, I am the best at being precious. This description of our heroine brought back memories of my two childhood pets, Lassie and Laddie who were the same breed as Mrs R. Snugglesworth. (Albie)

"Well Judge," I said modestly, "It turns out that I -" Popsicle bumped me, interrupting my speech. How rude. Apparently, Popsicle had forgotten that I am the Best at Graciously Accepting Compliments. (Meeko)

Day 4 - Video Interview

Day 5 - Reviews

Overall Woof Rating 5 Woofs: Pet lovers, adults and children will adore this hilarious and heartwarming introduction to Mrs R Snugglesworth and her canine friends. In this delightful first story, Mrs R Snugglesworth must complete her lawyer training and dig her friend Pitter Patter out of a hole. With her sass and larger than life character, readers are in for an extremely entertaining read as she aims to do just that! From the beginning, I was hooked and completely invested in the story, with its laugh out loud moments, and that fuzzy warm feeling from Mrs R Snugglesworth and her canine companions that every dog lover knows. The soppy terms of endearment gave a comical element and were relatable as we all know, and some of us are guilty of that crazy kind of affection for our pooches! The characters are great fun and very believable, the dialogue superb, I loved the doggy terminology. The story moves at a good pace, my only complaint would be that it ends too soon. There were no major issues identified that could pull me out of such a fabulous tale, and I am looking forward to the next book! (Benjamin)

Overall Woof Rating 5 Woofs: I loved this book. From beginning to end, it was a joy. Aimed at confident readers to enjoy alone, it would also work well as a bed-time story for younger children. The illustrations – black and white sketches – are well drawn, easily identify the characters, and provide wonderful and engaging facial expressions for the dogs. The tableau of canine personalities at the front of the book (including Hiccup, the cuddly toy) is a masterstroke, and will have kids checking again and again to see what type of dog is their favourite character. The author’s wonderful writing style, and her ability to present the tale humorously, through the eyes of Mrs R Snugglesworth, is unique and accomplished. Highly recommended. (Spooky)

Overall Woof Rating 5 Woofs: Taking me back to my own childhood days, this pawfect little tale follows the adventures of life in law, told through the eyes of an adorable canine protagonist. What was particularly pleasing about this book was the attention to detail - the author has gone to great lengths to present every aspect of the story from the unique perspective of a dog, even writing and speaking in a style that would befit man’s best friend. I especially liked the references to the humans within the story, my favourite being the lady of the family affectionately called ‘The Kitchen’ much to my own amusement. I even liked the way the dogs communicated with each other, specifically the ‘peemail’ approach, which I thought was pretty ingenious. Throughout the book there is consistency in the doggish approach and the author never once loses Mrs. R.’s ‘voice’ nor that of the other doggy friends and foes the feature. Each breed of dog is given its own quirks and personality traits and these are clearly portrayed in all chapters, resulting in believable if not entirely relatable (well they are dogs after all) characters! With a fast-paced plot line (perhaps a little too fast in places as I would have liked more information on canine law school) and distinctive concept, the author grabs you from the first page. An imaginative and attention-grabbing book, perfect for young pups growing in confidence with their reading. The Book Dragon awards this paws-itively delightful read. (Poppy)

Overall Woof Rating 5 Woofs: I must admit, I was immediately drawn to reading this book by the cover illustration and concept embodied in the title – ‘Mrs. R. Snugglesworth Attorney-at-Law’ – and was pleased by the opportunity to review it.  I was further delighted to find further illustrations inside – not necessarily standard for a chapter book – which really elevate the action, with images of each canine character in the narrative provided. The book is written from the perspective of Mrs. R. Snugglesworth herself, and that perspective provides a platform for plenty of humour.  Despite being much older than the targeted demographic, I really enjoyed the irony and interpretation of the world; the twists on canine behaviour (which are very familiar as a former dog owner) made for a very amusing read.  I would go so far as to say that dog lovers of all ages might enjoy it – and with its distinctive, yet accessible protagonist, I think it presents a good opportunity for reading to slightly younger children. As a book that’s very focused on dogs, humour, and a highly self-assured narrator (The Best at Loving Ham), there’s always the chance it may miss the mark with some readers, but not so at all for me.  I had high hopes set by the premise and artwork, and they were exceeded. (Bella)

Overall Woof Rating 5 Woofs: Mrs. R. Snugglesworth’s story offers an imaginative and hilarious peek at a dog’s life. Her unique point of view, trying to make sense of the world around her, is funny and charming. Dog owners will love recognising aspects from their own pets’ daily routines in Mrs. R. Snugglesworth’s words. The main character’s strong personality, her disposition to learn and her audacity set a great example for children. She is super confident, and nothing can stop her. A very positive message about how to never surrender and to do your best to achieve your objectives. Commit to a cause, fight for it, and you’ll find a way to succeed. This light-hearted story will engage young readers from the beginning and keep them turning the pages and laughing until the end. Short chapters divide the story into manageable sections and the prose is dynamic and easy to follow. The book is packed with funny names and descriptions that will make you giggle even once you’ve finished it. This is a highly entertaining story not only for children but also for the grown-ups reading it aloud with them. (Shiba)

Overall Woof Rating 5 Woofs: Although this is a children's book, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it brought back happy memories of having a dog myself. As I read, I recalled their antics and little behaviours. I can quite easily believe that peemail would be something that dogs would use to communicate and found this an amusing and creative idea. The story made me feel joyful and I often found myself laughing out loud. Since reading the book, it has made me observe the dogs I see whilst out walking and wonder what is going on in their heads.  The illustrations that accompany the book work beautifully alongside it and elevate this delightful creation even further. (Albie)

Overall Woof Rating 5 Woofs: From the very minute I set eyes on this book I had a good feeling about it. It's beautifully presented, with wonderful illustration work by Jon Davis, and the text and back cover blurb immediately engaged me. They say don't judge a book by its cover, but thankfully in this case, my instincts were right! The book is intelligent, witty and creative and the writing flows naturally. Amy has created a wonderous world within our own, a world where we can imagine what may be going on in our beloved animals' brains. It's a book that can be equally enjoyed by children and adults and the lessons it teaches (but never preaches) within its pages cover universal themes that humans can also relate to. (Meeko)
