Three years ago, I took a leap of faith and embarked on my writing journey after dedicating 40 years to the finance world. It was a significant shift, but oh, how it has transformed my life!
My first series of self-published children's books draws inspiration from the incredible animals and dedicated staff I encountered while volunteering at Animal Rescue. Reflecting on this journey, I realise how much I've grown—not just as a writer, but as a person. Each story I crafted allowed me to explore new facets of my identity and the world around me.
As my appreciation for the craft of writing stories and the business has deepened, I’ve set my sights on a new goal: to write stories for adults—both fiction and nonfiction. My first endeavour is a heartfelt short story about my mother, born in Bermondsey, London, at the dawn of World War II. This project has been a beautiful journey of discovery, allowing me to learn more about her and connect with my family history.
This journey has been a mix of wonder and challenge, but my passion for writing shines brighter than ever. I am grateful to be part of this magical profession. Drawing on the support of my incredible family, valuable contacts, and resilient self-belief, I'm now pleased to bring you my first adult fiction novel. Love, Lies and Butterflies.
Jane- The main character of the book, Jane, goes on a real rollercoaster ride throughout the events of this book. We get to experience the highs and lows of her emotions, which helps to give a real insight into her personality. Some women would have been destroyed by what happens to Jane in the earlier parts of the book, but she somehow finds the strength and determination to not let it define her. It’s truly beautiful to see her blossom and become a butterfly! (Michelle Marshall)
Jane- Jane Steele has lost her marriage and is now embarking on singlehood. For the first time in her life, she is living alone, navigating the pitfalls of life without her cheating husband and her children who have now flown the nest. She is every woman who has ever been jilted, particularly at that time of life when she is no longer young and desirable, as she believes. Instead, she is middle-aged and vulnerable. This story is of Jane’s coming of age – not of child to adult, but rather of an adult changing into a butterfly where she understands the new world she lives in, the loves and lies she encounters on the way to her ultimate emergence of the beautiful, confident woman she has always been inside. (Phoebe Wilby)
James- Honestly, I like James best, which sounds rotten, but I do like a good bad guy! James behaves terribly but I enjoyed his depth and cunning. And of course, his antics became the catalyst for the main character to gain the inspiration to act to make a new life for herself. (Eryn McConnell)
‘How is your epic adventure coming along?’ I smile and tap my fingers on the pages. ‘You wouldn't believe how much there is to explore. Each character feels like...’ ‘Like what?’ she prompts. ‘Like it's alive. It's like they are taking on a life of their own, growing and reaching for something.’ (Michelle Marshall)
The heavy thud of his footsteps echoes down the stairs, each step a brutal reminder of the love he so easily tossed aside. I want to scream, to throw something at him, but I stand frozen as the front door slams shut, echoing through the house like a gunshot. His car roars to life, and my mind races – where is he going? To her, I think bitterly. He's like an animal, and I have set him loose to chase after someone new. (Phoebe Wilby)
As I drive through little towns and villages, vibrant markets spring to life. Stalls burst with a riot of colours– crimson tomatoes, golden squash, and bright green cucumbers– all artfully stacked against the backdrop of weathered cobblestones and red canopies. I can't resist stopping and wandering through the maze of vendors; I love the sweet scent of ripe peaches mingling with the crisp aroma of fresh herbs, which fills the air with an enchanting bouquet. And how children's laughter partners the warmth of the sun to bathe the scene in summer vibes. (Eryn McConnell)
Michelle Marshall- 4.5 Stars. This is the first adult fiction novel by Christine Skippins, and she has really found her stride from the start. Love, Lies and Butterflies, although not always dealing with pleasant events, is easy to read. The author’s voice is clear, and I found myself caught up in the events of the story. If you’re looking for a tale full of intrigue, beautiful destinations and adventure, with a hint of romance, then I’d recommend this book.
Phoebe Wilby- 4.5 Stars. Christine Skippins’ Love, Lies, and Butterflies’ is a cautionary tale of how to find love again after your partner cheats – without getting burned in the process. It speaks of learning to let go, learning to take chances, and finally, once you’ve worked through all your issues, learning to trust again, even if it’s just to find a friend. This tale is based on a situation that is becoming more prevalent in our high-tech world – that of the charlatans who prey on the vulnerable, fleecing them of their resources while professing undying love and devotion. It shows how easily a seemingly good and wholesome relationship can sour, but more importantly, it shows how you can be like Jane and overcome. Jane Steele is our main character and is the narrator of this story. She has done so much for Gavin, her husband, only to find that it wasn’t enough to keep him from straying. He leaves and for a while her world falls apart. However, she soon learns that there is love to be found online. Enter James, a debonair, wealthy man who sweeps Jane off her feet with promises of love and devotion. However, a business trip to New York and then onto Istanbul develops into a nightmare when his passport is seized due to unpaid taxes and Jane is asked to bail him out. At some point, we meet Barry, a private investigator who helps Jane and other women bring the errant James to justice. Jane and Barry become an item. What Jane once found endearing about Barry she now finds cloying and suffocating. She moves on, breaking Barry’s heart. But what does Jane learn from all this self-reflection and relationship-hopping Skippins is a master at dialogue. Jane’s interactions with her paramours and friends keep the story moving along. We see the heartache and anguish at each break-up point through the dialogue. All Jane’s emotions are well displayed by the relevant emotion, from happiness and elation to virtual depression. The book is well-edited and the story flows well., being mostly evenly paced with a few places where I thought it dragged out a bit. However, I can see the value of this. After all, some relationships do die a slow death, which makes the slower pacing appropriate in those instances. Skippins has worked a masterful plot around the effects on a woman’s psyche as she navigates times of divorce, betrayal, and relationship mistakes, culminating in a destination of self-discovery. I enjoyed this book, and would highly recommend it to any adult woman, particularly those who have navigated divorce, cheating husbands, the pitfalls and dangers of online dating, and who are perhaps on their own journey of self-discovery.
Eryn McConnell- 4.5 Stars. This isn’t entirely my genre: I prefer a lot more action in my stories. That being said, I enjoyed the intrigue and the section with the surveillance as Jane with Barry et al built the case against James, the mastermind fraud. I felt personally that the romance was a little overblown, and quick to come to fruition. I was expecting there to be another marriage by the end, because our Jane really was seeking out romance! Overall though, it's got a positive message and ends on a high note. A good read.
