‘Magical Constabulary’ by Elmon Dean Todd introduces us to young Ivar, who is made most unwelcome at his Aunt and cousin’s home. Made to do all of the chores, and eat slug soup forever – yuk – he is offered an alternative choice in the Magical Constabulary, a children’s underworld police force, where mythical creatures roam and magic flows.
Appealing to children beginning to read chapter books, from age 7 upwards, there are some illustrations throughout to aid storytelling and engagement. Themes of magic, monsters, comradeship and the paranormal can be found within the narrative. Not only does this book craft Ivar’s character development, it will also teach gradual reading skill progression with an increasing language complexity.
Overall, I believe this gives an educational value to this magical adventure. Potentially this book will help children to encourage reading, support learning and inspire creativity through discussion points and complementary/themed activities. It can be read by children themselves, in class or with parents. A read I have no problem recommending. I award 4 stars.
