Pauline and the Polarberg by Amanda Archer-Brown is a colourful children’s picture book for readers in the 3-7 year old bracket.
Pauline the Polarbear is horrified to find her beach covered in rubbish and plastic bottles, so she starts to clean up with the help of her friends. The question of what to do with all of the bottles remains, until the idea of building a polarberg arises!
A polarberg is a recycled alternative place for the polar bears who are losing their natural homes due to global warming – and this book gives that message, but I do think the connection could be made stronger (between increasing rubbish and decreasing icebergs).
Unusual watercolour style illustrations complement the environment, teamwork and sustainability themed narrative perfectly. Easy going flow of the story, without complex language, encourages that change isn’t anything to be afraid of. Readers will love complementary activities, such as local beach clean ups, and inspire children’s creativity. (Perhaps also something that can be done as a school field trip or family day out, in the right locations.)
The story presents meaningful emotional exploration that creates lasting emotional impressions with its readers. Also, I believe this book encourages empathy and reflection, as well as educating readers.
