“Dragonbound” is a well crafted continuation in Author Helen Garraway’s angel-focused fantasy series, elevating the genre with its complex political intrigue and compelling character dynamics. This second instalment builds confidently on its predecessor, drawing readers in more quickly and maintaining a stronger narrative momentum throughout.
The story centres on two compelling protagonists: Solanji, a SoulBreather grappling with newfound powers and the weight of betrayal, brings depth and emotional resonance to the narrative. Her struggle to master her abilities while dealing with the consequences of her actions feels authentic and engaging. Demavrian, a fallen angel racing against time and his own mortality, presents as a fascinatingly complex character whose journey to uncover the truth about his fall from grace adds layers of mystery to the plot.
The author excels at world-building, creating a vivid contrast between the gloomy realm of Eidolon and sunny Puronia. The political machinations of the angel’s assembly are particularly well-crafted, offering a fresh take on celestial politics that avoids common tropes in angel-centered fantasy.
The pacing is expertly handled, balancing multiple storylines without losing momentum. The dual narrative structure works effectively, allowing readers to follow both Solanji’s development as a SoulBreather and Mav’s race against time while maintaining tension throughout both arcs.
What sets this book apart is its handling of immortal characters facing very mortal problems. The author doesn’t shy away from complex themes like redemption, betrayal, and the price of power, while maintaining the story’s essential sense of adventure and romance.
The relationship between Solanji and Mav evolves naturally despite their supernatural nature, their dialogue feeling genuine and their chemistry palpable. Supporting characters, particularly the independent oathsworn and the members of the Heavenly Host, add depth to the world without overshadowing the main narrative.
The mystery surrounding the corruption in the angel’s assembly and the fate of the soulless provides a compelling backdrop for the personal struggles of our protagonists. The author cleverly weaves these elements together, creating a story that satisfies both as a fantasy adventure and a character-driven narrative.
With its well-developed characters, engaging plot, and fresh take on angelic lore, “Dragonbound” represents fantasy fiction at its finest. The novel improves upon its predecessor, offering faster engagement and deeper character development while maintaining the unique elements that made the first book compelling. And did I mention…another Dragon!!!
This is one of the strongest angel-centred fantasies I’ve encountered, and I eagerly await the next instalment. I award 5 stars.
