Whispers is an anthology of short stories advertised on the back blurb as the stuff of nightmares. I do love to be frightened but, sadly, wasn’t in this case, mainly because I found the tales a little confusing.
Often the main protagonist is not named, and occasionally I was even unsure whether they were male or female. I understand that this was the author’s intention – to create ambiguity – but for me it simply disengaged me from the story. Explanations are rarely offered at the conclusion, clearly for the reader to make up their own mind.
However, as I was confused already, it merely added to the sense of never really being involved in the story. I would suggest that the author considered repositioning the sketched illustrations opposite the title page, rather than at the end of the story, so that the reader sees them immediately.
It is also noticeable occasionally that English is not the author’s first language, but the style is such that this actually enhances the prose, creating an air of mystery and individuality.
The tales are well thought out, well written, and original. The approach did not appeal to me personally, but may be perfect for others.
I award 3 stars.
