Produced in hardback to a very high standard, this book will appeal to confident readers in age range of around 8/13 years. The illustrations are cleverly executed using mainly black/white initially and introducing more colours as the story evolves. A small niggle was that the illustrations sometimes appeared a page too late. I’d suggest the picture with the blue flower faces the prose mentioning it, rather than overleaf.
I engaged immediately with the main protagonist, Sean Basil, and enjoyed his journey, both physical and personal, as he met the dragon and named his colours. Particularly interesting was the author and illustrator’s explanation about how the book was created. This may, hopefully, encourage young readers to experiment with writing or art works of their own – and pages are provided at the back of the book for story writing and colouring.
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable book that would make a perfect gift. I award 4 stars.
